Terms & Properties

Preferred Name: BCG Solution

Definition: A solution containing an attenuated, live culture preparation of the Bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) strain of Mycobacterium bovis with potential immunostimulating activity. Although the precise mechanism of action is unknown, upon intravesical administration, attenuated, live BCG bacteria in the solution come into direct contact with the bladder wall, inciting an antitumor granulomatous inflammatory reaction.

NCI-GLOSS Definition: A form of biological therapy for superficial (not invasive) bladder cancer. The solution is made from a weakened form of the bacterium Mycobacterium bovis (bacillus Calmette-Guerin) that does not cause disease but stimulates the body's immune system. A catheter is used to place the BCG solution into the bladder where it is held for about two hours.
